Surgical Procedures

Almost every pet will undergo a surgical procedure at some point in life.  Some of these procedures are commonly performed and electively scheduled, such as spays and neuters and periodically necessary dental cleanings. Other procedures are more critical, both in their nature and in timing, such as repairing orthopedic injuries, surgically removing tumors, and relieving intestinal obstructions.

Our veterinarian examines each patient prior to administering anesthesia. We recommend pre-anesthetic blood work for all patients, especially senior pets and those with chronic conditions.  This consists of an ALT, ALKP, CREA, GLU, TP, and BUN, which will check blood glucose, kidney and liver enzymes.  These blood tests will help us to assess the health status of your pet more completely.  Additionally, IV fluids may be administered during the surgery for your pet's health and safety.

While your pet is under anesthesia, our technician constantly monitors heart rate, blood pressure, respiration rate, and blood oxygen levels. Once the procedure is completed, the patient remains under supervision until fully recovered from the anesthesia. Your pet will be discharged to your care with additional medication, if necessary, for pain management at home.
